How to Create a Healthy Organizational Culture

What is organization culture?

According to Webster, it is the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization. In short, it is a summary of how people in your organization treat one another.
In today’s workplace, culture is an important consideration that most potential employees weigh in on prior to accepting job offers. Creating the kind of culture that is healthy and desirable for all staff is a one of the best tools for attracting new talent. The fact is, people want to work for organizations who have psychologically safe, inclusive, diverse, and supportive cultures. How can you build and sustain an effective organization culture, and how can you showcase it?

Here is a brief checklist:

  • You have clearly defined values that are posted and talked about frequently in team meetings.
  • Staff can express your company values.
  • All leaders, “walk the talk” and set an excellent example of your company values.
  • You value staff feedback and ask for it often and then action the main themes.
  • You have clearly defined key indicators that are monitored often.
  • Your leaders demonstrate “face-time” and do walk abouts to engage staff-often.
  • You are transparent and have limited need-to-know items.
  • Your leaders demonstrate respect. Always.
  • You are diverse. You have representation from all communities of people that are your customers and your neighbors.
  • You are inclusive. You have strategies, policies, mentors, that assist all new staff.
  • You have happy employees and can demonstrate evidence.
  • You have motivated staff and can demonstrate the evidence.
  • You make space for mistakes understanding that they are a part of innovation.
  • You provide training on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
